Edifier C3 2.1 Speaker System Review

The Edifier C3

Size

Many people like to place your PC speakers on their computer table, sharing the same limited space with their monitor, keyboard, mouse and even PC case. So, Edifier designed the C3 to be a very compact speaker system with a small footprint. Even though the Edifier C3 has more components than a conventional 2.1 speaker system, the total volume of all its components combined is small.

The satellite speakers are not particularly slim, but they are small enough to be placed next to a monitor. As they are magnetically-shielded, you need not worry about distorted CRT displays. The amplifier has a vertical configuration, which takes up less space and makes for easier placement on a table top. The only component that takes up a lot of space is the subwoofer. However, this is not a problem because it is usually placed on the floor.

Build

Edifier use medium-density fibreboard (MDF) in most of their products. Although it results in a more fragile product, the use of MDF results in better audio reproduction. Edifier used MDF in the construction of the subwoofer's and the satellite speakers' enclosures.

The build quality of the Edifier C3 components were pretty good with no obvious flaws. However, the speakers' enclosures are quite fragile due to the use of MDF (medium-density fibreboard). Their sharp corners are particularly prone to damage from knocks.

The satellite speakers and subwoofer have styrofoam feet attached to the bottom of their enclosures. Unfortunately, they were merely attached using double-sided tape and can be dislodged pretty easily. We would have preferred real rubber feet screwed into the enclosures.

Separate Component Configuration

The Edifier C3 is a little different from most 2.1 speaker systems because it consists of four main components. Instead of the usual trio of the subwoofer and two satellite speakers, the Edifier C3 has a separate amplifier. Although some might call it a 4-piece system, it would be more appropriate to call it a separate component system. Think of expensive Hi-Fi systems and you’ll get the idea.

The separate amplifier has several advantages. First of all, this gives you total freedom in placing the subwoofer. You need not worry about connecting it to the power socket and the two satellite speakers. With that handled by a separate amplifier, you can now chuck the subwoofer anywhere you want.

A separate amplifier also allows for easier access to the controls. Now, you can reach out and change the controls even with the subwoofer out of reach. It also greatly improves heat dissipation since the amplifier has its very own enclosure instead sharing it with a very large bass driver.
