Introduction

The NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX is the first of the future of graphics processors. It is the first GPU to feature a massively-parallel unified architecture, as well as the first DirectX 10 GPU to hit the market.

If you have not already read about the technology behind the GeForce 8800 GTX, and its brother the GeForce 8800 GTS, do take a look at our GeForce 8800 GTX/GTS Tech Report before proceeding further. This review will deal primarily with the GeForce 8800 GTX card and its performance.

But first, let's take a look at how the GeForce 8800 GTX compares against its predecessors. Here's a comparison table of NVIDIA's top GPUs of the past and present.

The new GeForce 8800 GTX boasts 53% more fillrate and 69% more memory bandwidth than the GeForce 7950 GX2. But that tremendous increase in performance came at the expense of transistors.

The GeForce 8800 GTX had almost 2.5X as many transistors as the GeForce 7900 GTX. Even the dual GPU GeForce 7950 GX2 could not come close to matching the number of transistors. With all that transistors, it's inevitable that the GeForce 8800 GTX is a massive chip. In fact, it is currently the biggest GPU in the market!
