Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard Review

Introduction

To be honest with you, I think gaming keyboards are one of the most gimmicky niches in the computer peripherals market these days. With good reason too.

Most just add in a tons of mostly useless LED lights to make the keyboard look "cool". Other keyboards boast gimmicks like superficial response rates, magic keys that are as hard as heck to program, UV reactive paints and tons of other useless crap.

In a world where prepubescent gamers are as easily milked as a cow on smack, I can't blame manufacturers and retailers for jumping on the bandwagon. After all, who doesn't love money, anyway?

Despite my reservations, I still forged ahead and decided to get the much-hyped Logitech G15 and give it a whirl. Yes, it was a USD 91 (RM 320) whirl. I thought I would regret it, but read on and see why this dinky little keyboard from Logitech is actually worth considering.

Although it is being touted as some uber-gaming keyboard that will somehow help me gain the edge over my opponents in games, frag more n00bs in Battlefield and maybe even give the female characters in my games bigger cleavages, perhaps there is more to the G15 than meets the eyes. Without much ado, let the review begin!

The Packaging

As expected from a company like Logitech, the box it came in was pretty solid. There was nothing much you can gather from the box blurb, although I can see that Logitech is touting the on board LCD as the key feature of this product.

There is nothing much on the back of the box, except a simple description of the keyboard's main features, and some user scenarios. There is also a picture of the keyboard, just in case you have no idea what you are buying.

The thing I like about Logitech's packaging is its professional feel. It doesn't have that "You will be a 1337 gamer if you use this!" feel about it. In fact, Logitech didn't even stoop as far as a picture of some deadly animal to insinuate that you will kill really well with it.

Right from the beginning, the G15 has given me a good impression. The box is simple, neat, utilitarian and best of all, a TLA for a name.

The Contents

The contents of the box are rather spartan. Well, less junk to deal with, in case this keyboard turns out bad and I need to dump it at the FTZ. After all, all you really need is the keyboard itself, the driver and the wrist rest. I don't think even the little manual is necessary, to be quite honest. Neat and nice, no complaints from me so far.

The package contains:

  • One Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard
  • One Installation CD with GamePanel Software
  • One User Guide
