Vizo Luxon 3.5" USB & SATA External HDD Enclosure Review

Vizo Luxon 3.5" USB & SATA External HDD Enclosure

These days, there are so many cheap peripherals being released by Taiwanese and Chinese companies. As these peripherals are technically-simple, most compete based on their low cost. As a result, their quality is usually not satisfactory.

Therefore, it was a pleasant surprise to see that the Vizo Luxon is quite different. Not only does the Luxon look good, it also feels good, thanks to its aluminium shell. But the Luxon isn't all about looks.

Unlike many cheap HDD enclosures, the Luxon actually supports both IDE and SATA hard drives. Albeit you have to set the proper interface using a jumper, but at least it supports both interfaces. In addition, it supports direct SATA transfers as well as the more common USB 2.0 connectivity. Vizo even provides a SATA bracket for use with your PC.

When it comes to accessories, the Luxon is truly loaded. It comes with a lot of stuff, even a mini screwdriver and a piece of cleaning cloth. Let's not forget the SATA bracket and cable. We were, of course, a bit frustrated and dissapointed with the lack of effort put into the proper packaging of the contents, that left out the jumpers and gave us a wrong manual. But Vizo certainly did a good job in providing everything you need and more in the box.

Now, you may think that such a product from a small, unknown Taiwanese manufacturer would not be able to perform as well as more expensive enclosures. Well, think again. We pit it against the Seagate Pushbutton Backup 750GB and the Luxon not only kept up with it, it was actually slightly faster than the Pushbutton Backup in WinBench 99.

Of course, the Vizo Luxon was paired with a fast hard drive - the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10. The Luxon's performance is tied closely to the performance of the hard drive installed in it. But it's good to see that the Luxon was able to keep up with the Pushbutton Backup. It goes to show that the JMicron JM20338controller used is truly up to the job.

Overall, the Vizo Luxon offers great value for those who are looking for a stylish external HDD enclosure that supports both IDE and SATA hard drives, as well as offering direct SATA connectivity in addition to the standard USB cable. Its performance will be highly dependent on the drive you pair it up with, but as our tests have shown, it is more than capable of keeping up with the best.

Our Review System

Tech ARP is committed to developing new ways to improve your experience with us. As part of our continuous efforts to improve the value of our reviews to you, we are implementing a multi-tier review system.

This review system is designed to allow you to quickly receive information on the latest hardware or software. This new system also allows you to quickly get the gist of the review without reading through it. This can be very useful, especially in situations where you need to make a quick purchase decision.

In this new system, we start with a Product Overview whenever a company sends us a press release about their latest product. We shift through extraneous PR-talk to create a straightforward summary of the product's features as well as specifications. This allows you to quickly find out all the pertinent details about the product, without reading through official press releases.

When we receive the product for review, we will quickly take photos of it and create a Pictorial Review. The purpose of a pictorial review is to allow you, the reader, to quickly examine the product visually. It may help you make better purchase decisions, especially if you cannot wait for the full review.

After thorough testing, we will post a Comprehensive Review of the product. This adds on to the pictorial review with comprehensive test results and our final conclusion on the product.

But no matter whether you are reading a Pictorial Review or a Comprehensive Review, you can always read the summary of the review as well as examine the product's specifications right on the first page. In all our new reviews, we will maintain the first page as a Product Overview page. If the product is listed in PriceGrabber, you can also check out the lowest price online.

We hope this new review system will make your experience a lot more enjoyable and informative!
