Marvell XScale PXA3xx Application Processors Tech Report

Conclusion

The new Marvell PXA3xx processors may not be revolutionary, but they are certainly an important evolution of a dominant application processor. Even though 3D acceleration is still not offered, these processors promise better performance and power-efficiency over their predecessors.

Both PXA320 and PXA310 are performance-oriented processors, with features like hardware video acceleration and a 32-bit DDR memory interface.

With a 768KB framebuffer, these two processors are perfect for VGA displays. The PXA320 runs at 806MHz while the PXA310 has a core speed of 624MHz.

The PXA300, on the other hand, is designed to offer the best value for money. As such, it foregoes advanced features like hardware video acceleration and VGA display support.

Therefore, it makes do with a 16-bit DDR interface and a 256KB framebuffer, sufficient only for a QVGA display. But like the PXA310, it runs at 624MHz.

With the debut of the three PXA3xx series processors, Marvell officially takes over the helm from Intel. Will they be able to successfully market and sell these processors? Time will tell.
