Seagate Pocket Hard Drive

The Seagate Pocket Hard Drive is a rather unique USB drive. Unlike flash memory drives, this USB drive packs a miniature hard drive within its compact and robust case!

Of course, it's not the most compact storage solution. The ubiquitous flash memory drives are smaller and can come with more storage space. Also, the Pocket Hard Drive requires quite a bit more power than flash memory drives. So, what advantages does the Pocket Hard Drive have over other USB drives?

Cost per GB would be the first and most important advantage. At time of print, the Seagate 5GB Pocket Hard Drive cost only USD 83 while flash memory drives with capacities of 4GB cost almost four times as much! If you want a large capacity at the lowest possible cost, nothing beats the Seagate Pocket Hard Drive.

Also, it was not easy to find flash memory drives with capacities greater than 4GB. If you need storage capacities of more than 4GB, you will find it easier to buy a Pocket Hard Drive than scour around for a super-large flash memory drive.

However, not everything is rosy with the Pocket Hard Drive. Its slow internal hard drive caused it to be slower than flash memory drives. This is especially true when writing small files. Even its 2MB buffer memory could not mitigate the poor performance.

But if you do not mind its rather lacklustre performance, you will be delighted with its design. Seagate equipped the Pocket Hard Drive with a rather ingenious system of storing the USB cable and connector within the circular shell! The integrated USB cable system is not only convenient but also makes cable management a total breeze.

Just twist the case to reveal the USB connector and extend its cable. Twist it back and the USB connector and cable disappears! Kudos to Seagate for coming up with something like that!

In addition, the USB connection not only transfers data but also powers the drive! Everything you need is truly in the Pocket Hard Drive. You need not carry separate USB and power cables. Just pocket the drive and go!

Because of its superb design, large capacity and low cost, we feel the Seagate 5GB Pocket Hard Drive deserves our Reviewer's Choice Award! Now, if Seagate could improve its performance, this Pocket Hard Drive would be worthy of an Editor's Choice Award. In any case, congratulations, Seagate!

* Our New Review System

ARP is committed to developing new ways to improve your experience with us. As part of our continuous efforts to improve the value of our reviews to you, we are implementing a new review system.

This new review system is designed to allow you to quickly receive information on the latest hardware. This new system also allows you to quickly get the gist of the review without reading through it. This can be very useful, especially in situations where you need to make a quick purchase decision.

In this new system, we start with a Product Overview whenever a company sends us a press release about their latest product. We shift through extraneous PR-talk to create a straightforward summary of the product's features as well as specifications. This allows you to quickly find out all the pertinent details about the product, without reading through official press releases.

When we receive the product for review, we will quickly take photos of it and create a Pictorial Review. The purpose of a pictorial review is to allow you, the reader, to quickly examine the product visually. It may help you make better purchase decisions, especially if you cannot wait for the full review.

After thorough testing, we will post a Comprehensive Review of the product. This adds on to the pictorial review with comprehensive test results and our final conclusion on the product.

But no matter whether you are reading a Pictorial Review or a Comprehensive Review, you can always read the summary of the review as well as examine the product's specifications right on the first page. In all our new reviews, we will maintain the first page as a Product Overview page. If the product is listed in PriceGrabber, you can also check out the lowest price online.

We hope this new review system will make your experience a lot more enjoyable and informative!
